Purchasing a Trailer Hub Cap

The best way to buy a trailer hub cap is to get the right size. If you don’t have the right size hubcap on, it will not seal correctly and will eventually leak. You can measure the studs on your trailer wheel to determine what size hubcap you need. The most common sizes are 8 of 5/8’s and 12 of 3/4’s.

Once you know what size your trailer needs, you will need to decide what color you want your hub caps to be. There are several different colors to choose from, including black, white and chrome. You can also get a special hubcap that is painted to match your truck.

If you are painting your hubcaps, make sure that the room you are in is well ventilated. Spray paint requires a lot of air flow to dry properly. It is also important to use a high quality primer such as Krylon or Rustoleum, and to follow the directions on the can. A couple of thin coats of primer spaced 30 to 60 minutes apart should be enough. It is also a good idea to practice your technique on a piece of cardboard or scrap metal before you start on your trailer hub caps.

One of the biggest problems with greased hubs is that they can cause rust to form on the inside of the trailer wheels. This is a problem because it can cause the wheels to not turn as smoothly and will wear out the bearings more quickly than they should. A few years ago, Shoreland’r sent out a warning to boat trailer owners about this issue.

If you do not have a hub press, it is very easy to replace a grease cap with a new one by using the wood-and-hammer method. Simply lay a piece of wood against one side of the Bearing Buddy and strike it with a hammer to break the old cap loose. It is easy to then remove the cotter pin and the old grease cap from the hub, and then put in a new Bearing Buddy with a fresh supply of grease.
